PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria County Coroner’s Office says the death of a nine-month-old girl in late July is considered a homicide.
Coroner Jamie Harwood says an autopsy demonstrated no gross or significant natural disease or abnormality.
However, Harwood released a toxicology report Friday that indicated the baby died of fentanyl intoxication and the manner of death has been ruled a homicide.
The baby’s mother, Zenai Wolford, 19, has previously been charged with one count of endangering the life or health of a child, a Class 3 felony.
Peoria police had reported Wolford took her child to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center after midnight July 26 claiming she was unresponsive and not breathing.
As officers searched Wolford’s home they found a plastic bag with MDMA, also known as ecstasy or molly, in the baby’s crib. Prosecutors say it looked like the bag had been chewed on.
Police said there were two pills left when they found the drugs in the crib.
The investigation into the death continues.
