EAST PEORIA, Ill. – There’s more Cougars in central Illinois this fall.
Illinois Central College on Thursday reported a 5.1% increase in enrollment for the fall 2024 semester, compared to fall 2023. The total number enrolled is 8,008, though the college says official numbers will be released by the Illinois Community College Board in early September.
The college has also seen a 3.8% increase in credit hours, with 2,416 more than last fall.
ICC’s Vice President of Marketing and Outreach Kim Armstrong says part of the increase is due to the addition of new programs, such as construction management.
“We work with our regional employers every day to make sure our programming aligns with where the jobs are,” Armstrong said. “Dr. Quirk-Bailey and the college have made a commitment that we will not offer programs that don’t lead to a family sustaining wage.”
Armstrong said the college is also offering more options on when to take classes to fit the needs of working students, as well as online classes.
Armstrong says most of the new students enrolled this year are students of color, with around 300 more in the fall of 2024. The college says that’s an about 10% increase from the past fall.
The college’s Kim Armstrong says the increase is due to removing some barriers to give those students more opportunities, such as using GPA’s for placement courses.
