PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria’s City Manager Patrick Urich updated council members Tuesday night on how negotiations between GFL, the city and Peoria County are progressing in regards to Landfill 3.
“What we’ve been discussing is a transfer station that would operate out of their Pottstown location, that would take up to 165,000 tons of waste a year…and that would be open by March 31st of 2026,” Urich said.
Urich told the council a deal is close to being reached.
“The plan would be that we would open landfill three by Jan. 1 of 2035. That decreases the amount of time that we would operate the transfer station from 15 years to 10 years. But it would ensure that we have a place to dispose of our waste for at least the next 36 years and possibly longer,” Urich said.
Urich discussed potential savings for the city, saying currently Peoria pays $90 per ton of waste, but the new agreement with GFL would drop the rate per customer to $57.22 in Peoria County, and $47.22 for Peoria customers, though the amounts could change due to inflation.
Urich says the deal would save Peoria roughly $1.6 million in disposal costs.
Council members voted unanimously to table the agenda item.
Urich says paperwork for the deal must still be finalized. It goes to the Peoria County Board, then the Peoria City/County Landfill Committee, before returning to the Council for approval.
