PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria’s mayor says Big Al’s Speakeasy has been shut down.
25 News reports that Rita Ali confirmed the business’ closure with an “indefinitely suspension” of the club’s liquor license.
The agreement with owner Kenneth Kummerow also means he must transfer ownership of the to someone new, who the city must approve of.
Big Al’s owners must also plead guilty to a charge of illegal activities in the building, and be fined $3,000 each month until operations at the new establishment begin.
Ali says once the new owner is established, the business must operate as a Class A establishment with no subclass license, and close at 1:00 A.M. instead of 4:00 A.M. for at least six months.
The decision comes after multiple violent incidents at the establishment. A bouncer at the club was shot in October of 2023. In July of 2024, a shooting occurred inside the establishment, with the manager allegedly attempting to cover up evidence.
