PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria police have one suspect in custody in connection with a fatal shooting, the city’s tenth homicide of 2024.
Officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Main Street around 2:30 a.m. Friday on a report of a person shot.
When they arrived, they located a man down with an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.
The Peoria County Coroner’s Office says Sylvester Erving, 45, of Camblin Avenue in Peoria, was pronounced dead in the hospital’s intensive care unit at 11:52 a.m. Friday. An autopsy is scheduled Monday.
Police spokesperson Simone Roth says after police identified Lacorles Edwards, 40, as a suspect, Edwards turned himself in at 4:50 p.m. Friday and was subsequently arrested on charges of first degree murder and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.
