PEORIA, Ill. – Two people were ordered to remain in jail Tuesday in connection to a shooting death in downtown Peoria last week.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says petitions to detain 40-year-old Lacorles Edwards and 44-year-old Walter Dearmond were granted.
Edwards is accused of shooting 45-year-old Sylvester Erving at around 2:30 A.M. Friday in the area of Main and Madison. Erving was found with a gunshot wound to the head by police and later died at a hospital.
Prosecutors say surveillance video shows Erving reportedly approaching Edwards on the street, with the two fighting. Erving attempted to walk away numerous times, but Edwards continued to fight, then allegedly shot Erving at close range.
Edwards then reportedly fled the scene and ditched the gun, with police finding it in a bucket of water in an alley behind the businesses on Main Street.
Prosecutors say Dearmond was found later with a gun that he allegedly picked up near Erving, and is charged with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon.
Dearmond is due back in court on September 25th for an arraignment hearing, with Edwards due for his arraignment on October 3rd.
