WEST PEORIA, Ill. – The doors to a state-of-the-art behavioral health facility for youth in central Illinois is close to opening its doors.
Leaders from Carle Health and the community cut the ceremonial ribbon Thursday morning at Trillium Place Young Minds Center. Carle spent a year renovating the former Heddington Oaks location in West Peoria to make the facility possible.
The facility boasts expanded inpatient and outpatient services for youth ages 4-17, with 23 to 44 inpatient beds. Outpatient care includes partial hospitalization and programs, as well as recovery services.
There will also be on-site school services for inpatients, open spaces with calming colors, natural light, and outdoor spaces. The center will also have services for the entire family to ensure they can stay together throughout the entire healing process.
For Carle President and CEO Doctor James Leonard, the facility means a little more to him.
“We’re so often focused, and I’m a physician, on the clinical work that happens; sore throats, eats, things like that. And we forget the devastation and impact of behavioral health on all of our communities, and particularly our young people,” Leonard.
Trillium Executive Director of Community Services Derrick Booth says one of the goals of the Young Minds Center is to break down barriers and stigmas about mental health, especially among youth.
“I’m a firm believer that everybody can benefit from counseling and therapeutic space. But also, we want individuals to reach out when they do have concerns, when they’re not feeling okay, and to know there’s safe places to get the services that they need,” Booth said.
Young Minds Center does not have a targeted opening date, but leaders expect the facility to open by early October.
