PEORIA, Ill. – Drought conditions continue to persist across central Illinois.
The latest update released Thursday shows abnormally dry conditions in all of Peoria, Tazewell, Woodford, Marshall, and Stark Counties, the same as last week.
Conditions are a little worse in Fulton County, where moderate drought conditions continue in more than 63% of the western half of the county.
The lack of rain in central Illinois has not helped alleviate the drought. The National Weather Service in Lincoln says 0.72 inches of rain fell in September in Peoria, making it the 4th driest September on record.
That’s more than 2.7 inches below the average for the month.
Across Illinois, 70% of the state is experiencing some level of drought, more prominent in northern and central Illinois. That’s down from 92.8% last week, when the southern part of the state was also experiencing drought conditions.
