PEORIA, Ill. – An Ohio man accused of stealing a vehicle with a young child inside will stay in the Peoria County Jail until trial.
Court documents show Judge Paul Gilfillan found 45-year-old Victor Farris of Cincinnati, Ohio, purposefully lied and deceived the victim to lure them from the car in order to steal it.
According to 25 News, the documents also showed someone was trying to hang onto the car to save the child, with Farris trying to shake them off, knowing the child was in the car.
Prosecutors said Farris led the Peoria County Sheriff office and other law enforcement on an almost two-week manhunt last month. The three-year-old was dropped off at a Bartonville gas station within hours of the kidnapping.
Farris was apprehended in Monroe County, Iowa, after running from a train conductor who recognized him as he leapt off a train.
Farris was booked in the Peoria County Jail for aggravated vehicular hijacking, kidnapping, and the possession of a stolen vehicle.
Prosecutors argued the alleged kidnapping and manhunt created fear in the community. Farris’ criminal record and psychological history also contributed to why he should stay behind bars.
