PEORIA, Ill. – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Dr. Jessica Guingrich, Lead Breast Imager and Medical Director at OSF’s Centers for Breast Health in Peoria, says most medical organizations and experts suggest getting a first mammogram at 40.
But, there are reasons to start earlier, including your family history. Establishing an annual mammogram schedule, and knowing your personal risk factors are important.
“It’s always important to talk to your physician, but the reason to start early and have mammograms yearly, is to catch cancers before they get to an advanced stage,” Guingrich says.
OSF HealthCare is holding a one-stop cancer screening event on Friday, October 18 in Peoria.
“Anybody can just come and stop at the OSF Cancer Institute. There will be various cancer screenings provided…of course mammography, but even other cancer screenings like oral cancer, or skin cancers, colon cancer screenings, and genetic cancer risk assessments,” Guingrich says.
Walk-ins are welcome. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Screening guidelines must be met for screenings to be completed. Some screenings are free of charge, while others will be billed to your insurance.
