PEORIA, Ill. – An abandoned building on Peoria’s South Side will soon meet the wrecking ball.
The Peoria City Council on Tuesday approved the demolition of the South Side Market building on Adams Street.
Council documents indicate the building is in dangerous conditions, due to a large hole in the roof, which is causing the western wall to bow and lean towards Ligonier St. The city says the building is also the target of break-ins, board ups, and lot maintenance.
Community Director of Development Joe Dulin says the city currently does not own the building, but utilized the city’s code enforcement and legal department to ensure demolition occurs.
The city will use $200,000 in Eagle View TIF funds for the project, which Dulin says will cover more than just the demolition.
“We might find some environmental issues inside the building once we start, which is why the ask is for $200,000, which is over the price of what the bid was,” Dulin said.
Three companies bid for demolition, with Jimax Corp. winning with a bid of $99,906.71. The other two bids came in at costs of $324,000 and $356,000.
Dulin says the hope is to have the building torn down in the next couple months, with the hope to take ownership of the property in the near future.
