PEORIA Ill. – A local rowing team, made up of breast cancer survivors and previvors, took home some hardware after competing in the world’s largest rowing event, in Boston last weekend.
CREW-309 or Cancer Recovery Empowering Women Rowing Team placed third out of 11 teams, in the inaugural Head of the Charles Regatta race for breast cancer and related illnesses, last Saturday.
Leann Crall is a breast cancer survivor and CREW-309 rower — she says it was a surreal experience.
“We just rode our hearts out, you know, we just felt the power of all eight of those women rowing in the boat and it was amazing. We weren’t focused on placing, we were just focused on being one in the boat,” Leann Crall said.
Crall explains why the group does it…
“We row, to lower out reoccurrence. We’ve always been a group that is not focused on competition, we’ve never competed before. We meet to improve our bodies, improve our minds, improve our spirits, through rowing,” Leann Crall said.
The team says they plan on competing next year, and hope they’re invited back.
