WASHINGTON, Ill. – A possible safety risk to students at Washington Community High School has been resolved.
In an email to families, Superintendent Kyle Freeman said school officials, along with Washington Police, began investigating after a threatening note was found on the wall of a bathroom stall.
According to 25 News, the student responsible for the threat has been identified and questioned – and the matter was found to not be a credible threat, Freeman says.
The male student was arrested and later released to his parents, according to Washington Police Chief Mike McCoy. The student is now facing felony charges, but McCoy did not elaborate on what the charges were.
Superintendent Freeman says students can resume bringing backpacks and other bags to school starting Monday, October 28.
In a statement, Freeman says threats to school safety will not be tolerated and will be addressed appropriately.

Dear WCHS Families,
The possible student safety risk reported on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 has been resolved. The school administration, in conjunction with the Washington Police Department (WPD), began an investigation immediately upon learning about a threatening note written on the wall of a restroom. The person responsible for the note was identified and questioned. The matter was not found to be a credible threat, and students may resume using book bags and bags as normal, along with using all entrances, on Monday, October 28, 2024.
While a school will not publicly discuss the details of student discipline, we can share that this type of behavior is not tolerated and threats to school safety will be addressed appropriately as outlined in our student discipline policy.
We are grateful for the diligent work of the administrators and WPD that resulted in the identification of the person responsible for the threat. We also appreciate that students and parents/guardians remain involved in keeping our school community as safe as possible by reporting concerns directly to the school. ,
Kyle W. Freeman, Ph.D. Superintendent of Schools Washington CHSD #308
