PEORIA, Ill. – Three Peoria politicians and a newcomer have filed petitions to have their names on the ballot for next year’s mayoral race.
As of Monday’s deadline to file, the candidates include incumbent Mayor Rita Ali, 2nd District Councilman Chuck Grayeb, At-Large Councilman John Kelly, and 23-year-old Jake Ryan.
Ryan, who owns a Peoria-based consulting firm called Council & Associates Advisors, tells 25 News he believes he can use his business contacts to bring 1,000 jobs to downtown Peoria.
Since there are more than three candidates on the ballot, there will be a primary on Feb. 25, with the top two candidates moving on to the April 1st election.
A primary will also be held in the 2nd District Council race for Grayeb’s council seat. The candidates are Krista Wresinski, Alex Carmona, and Estrella Diaz.
There are three other contested council races, but those will not require a primary. In the 1st District, incumbent Denise Jackson will face challenger James Kemper.
In the 4th District, incumbent Andre Allen will face challenger Jamie Messmore. City Councilman Denis Cyr, who represents the 5th District, will face Hind Abi-Akar.
3rd District representative Tim Riggenbach is running unopposed for his seat.
There will be a primary for Peoria’s city treasurer. Former Councilman and mayoral candidate Jim Montelongo filed nomination papers on Monday, joining Brooke Petty Sommerville and Asya Washum on the ballot.
The only person who filed a petition for the Peoria city clerk position is incumbent Stephanie Tarr.
In township races, Republican Anita Meeker will challenge Democratic incumbent LaTrina Leary for supervisor. Andrew Couri and Terry Grawey, who are both Republicans, have filed to run for township assessor.
