PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria public television station WTVP is speaking out against what it calls a “reckless political stunt” on its broadcast tower.
President and CEO Jenn Gordon says a pro-Donald Trump flag was discovered on Monday on its Cole Street broadcast tower by a broadcast engineer. She says it appears the perpetrator climbed a security fence and climbed about 200 feet up the tower to put the flag on it.
Gordon says the incident is concerning for two reasons. For one, it gives off an appearance of WTVP endorsing a political candidate when it works to maintain political neutrality. And she says it’s a “dangerous stunt.”
“Someone could have been seriously hurt in the process of doing so, and while I’m glad it didn’t happen, I’m certainly concerned that anyone was attempting to climb that tower,” Gordon said.
Gordon says a police report has been filed, and a professional crew is being contacted to remove the flag from the tower as quickly and safely as possible.
