EAST PEORIA Ill. – Elected-officials in East Peoria will not be subject to term-limits going forward.
At Tuesday’s council meeting, members discussed the possibility of installing term-limits for the positions of Mayor and City Commissioner.
The motion failed after a four-to-one vote.
East Peoria Mayor, John Kahl, on why he doesn’t see it as a necessary change.
“In my eyes, every four-years our citizens do have a voice and if they think we are doing a good job, then you get another four-year term. They don’t think you are doing a good job, you’re gone — and I respect that decision,” Kahl said.
Commissioner, Michael Sutherland, was the only council member to vote in-favor of the change.
“I truly believe that if you can set up your department, in whatever you are over, in a positive way in 12 years, then you are either ineffective or you are lazy and have no good ideas,” Sutherland said.
If it did pass, elected officials would only be allowed to serve three, four-year terms.
