EAST PEORIA, Ill. – The cost to build a new police building in East Peoria is now known.
City council approved a bid of around $21.6 million at Tuesday night’s meeting from River City Construction.
Mayor John Kahl says it was a “competitive” bid process and took around two hours to go through all the submitted bids for the project. He says the city is “finally there” in moving forward with building the new station.
“I appreciate the council’s support on this, and it’s really going to be an impressive building for decades to come,” Kahl said.
The two-story, 4,000 square foot building, will be located on Camp Street near Clock Tower Drive. The new station is expected to have more secure areas to drop off people taken in custody and more advanced technology than its current home.
Commissioner Dan Decker says the cost will be worth it for an upgraded facility for the police department.
“So many things that will be better for our department; chain of evidence, just housing of people that we need to house for a short period of time,” Decker said. “It is nice that we’re finally able to get to a point of doing this for many reasons.”
Kahl says a ground breaking for construction could come this month.
