PEKIN Ill. – The holiday season is a busy one for us all, especially for your local mail carrier.
They’re the ones out there, delivering the gifts you’ve ordered online, in the snow and cold, at all times of the day.
We spoke with Abbey Bort, a mail carrier in Pekin, who told us she feels the pressure of delivering for the holidays.
“People are very reliant on us, especially during this time of year. People are getting their cards and packages in a timely manner, usually, we do the best we can,” Bort said.
Mail carriers are some of the most commonly seen people during this time of year.
Bort says her delivery routes are extensive.
“I have a pretty long route I’d say, on average I get 31,000 steps a day, comes to about 13 miles a day, that’s what I walk on a day-to-day basis,” Bort said.
She also claims, each day brings it’s own set of challenges.
“You never know, coming into work, what that day is going to look like or what you are going to walk in to, as far as volume of packages and mail, definitely have to be prepared for that and you have to stay hydrated, that’s one of the main things,” Bort said.
Bort claims she usually delivers more than 100 packages daily — and you can double that for the amount of cards being delivered.
