PEORIA/EAST PEORIA, Ill. – A new bridge that connects Peoria and East Peoria will partially open Thursday.
The Illinois Department of Transportation says traffic patterns will switch overnight on the eastbound McClugage Bridge to prepare for the soft opening.
IDOT says the bridge will initially have two lanes open, one from War Memorial Drive and one from Adams Street.
Northbound traffic on Adams will be able to access the bridge via a new ramp, but southbound access will not change.
“The McClugage Bridge is not just a local landmark, but an asset that safely and reliably connects the state’s important, vital areas,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “We are proud to reach this milestone, knowing we are almost at the finish line.
IDOT says arch painting and electrical work still needs to be completed on the bridge, as well as road construction around the bridge.
The remainder of the bridge over Adams Street is the primary work left to be done on the Peoria side, while one full lane of road needs to still be built.
Construction on the new bridge began in the winter of 2022, but road work started as far back as 2019.
