PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria Zoo is mourning the loss of its Hoffman’s two-toed sloth.
The zoo announced Friday the passing of Dustin at 47 years old.
In a statement, the zoo says Dustin began to experience numerous age-related health challenges with no viable remedies.
He was euthanized in what the zoo says was to prevent unnecessary suffering.
The zoo says Dustin’s decades-long legacy is delighting countless visitors with a unique-charm and laid-back demeanor.
“His long life with us reflects the incredible bond between our animals and their caretakers. We are grateful for the joy he brought to so many and the memories that will live on in the hearts of our staff and visitors,” said Zoo Director Max Lakes.
The Peoria Zoo is working with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums on transferring another sloth to the zoo, but notes there is a waiting list.
