PEORIA, Ill. – A man will remain in jail until trial after his recent arrest for an armed robbery at a South Peoria store a year and a half ago.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says a petition to detain 60-year-old Rufus Sanders was granted Monday at a detention hearing.
Sanders was booked in the Peoria County Jail Sunday on an armed robbery charge for allegedly robbing the South Peoria Dollar General in July of 2023 with a machete.
Prosecutors say Sanders allegedly wore a white mask and came into the store with the machete, then demanded a cashier give him money from a register.
Sanders reportedly then went behind the counter, took all of the money in the register, which was around $344, then fled.
Prosecutors say the entire incident was recorded on surveillance video. Investigators recovered the mask used, which was discarded nearby, and used DNA to identify Sanders as the suspect.
