CANTON Ill. – A 32-year-old man, who police said was on pretrial release, is jailed after allegedly leading Fulton County Sheriff’s deputies on a chase that wound up in Canton where vehicles were damaged, and the suspect threatened to shoot an officer.
According to 25NEWS — shortly before 9:00 a.m. on Friday, deputies said they tried to stop 32-year-old Paul Montgomery’s black Lincoln.
In Canton, police said Montgomery hit a vehicle at 5th Avenue and Elm Street, stopped suddenly and accelerated in reverse striking the deputy’s vehicle.
Montgomery allegedly threatened to shoot the officer and ran into an apartment building.
Police said they set up a perimeter and searched the building, finding Montgomery in a crawl space.
He reportedly covered himself with dirt to avoid capture, but he was taken into custody.
In Montgomery’s car, police said they found five grams of crack cocaine, 51 grams of methamphetamine, tablets of the opioid pain killer and cough suppressant hydrocodone, and methadone.
He has been booked on numerous charges including aggravated fleeing and eluding, aggravated battery to a peace officer with a deadly weapon, threatening a public official, and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.
The sheriff’s office said Montgomery was wanted on three Tazewell County warrants and a warrant from Fulton County.
Authorities said Montgomery was on pretrial release related to previous charges.
