PEORIA Ill. – Locals gathered to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., Monday afternoon, in Peoria.
A luncheon was held at the Peoria Civic Center.
Michael Hurt, with the Peoria Employees for Community Concern, was in attendance — and says the event’s keynote speaker,
Nontombi Naomi Tutu, the daughter of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, is a notable one.
“We are really excited to have her here, her perspective of what we consider to be globally, this issue of disocclusion, discrimination, and how we can bring about a more unified society,” Hurt said.
Hurt says the event greatly benefits younger generations.
“And a lot of our young people are here today, so they get the history that they don’t get in school — and then they get to see because of the turnout, how important it is for everybody. What we have today, that we are going to unveil today, that is very special, are the original notes from Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” Speech,” Hurt said.
Organizers say more than 500 people were in attendance.
