At the Movies with Casey Foreman: “The Brutalist”
The Brutalist puts its audience through a rigorous example of the American Dream, that explains its title… Quite brutal indeed.
Adrian Brody puts on a career-best performance, I absolutely loved his character, really somebody you WANT to root for, for the majority of the film.
The intermission?
Loved it – why don’t more directors do this???
The film’s long runtime is definitely not for everyone, but I appreciate the dedication to storytelling.
It’s even more impressive when you factor in that it was filmed in 34 days, and cost a mere $10mil.
Is The Brutalist the best film of 2024?
Maybe.
But it’s not the guaranteed sweep at the Oscar’s like Oppenheimer was last year (to me).
The ending may have viewers unsettled, I believe it fits the harsh nature of the film.
If you have the slightest interest in seeing this, I’d recommend you do, as its very different than mostly anything in recent memory, and is sure to be different than you are expecting.
That’s all we want out of cinema / film, isn’t it??
