PEORIA, Ill. – A blast of winter weather is expected to cover central Illinois on Wednesday.
25 News First Alert Chief Meteorologist Chuck Collins says light freezing rain is expected to spread throughout the area after lunchtime and continue through the evening rush hour.
Collins says the system isn’t considered to be an ice storm, but could cause problems with up to a tenth of an inch of glazing. The freezing rain is expected to turn into rain later in the evening.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for central Illinois, starting at noon on Wednesday and lasting until midnight.
Peoria Public Works began treating roads Wednesday morning in anticipation of the freezing rain, with crews doing around-the-clock operations.
Crews are applying liquid and salt pretreatments to high-impact areas; such as overpasses, bridges, hills, and main roads. Treatment of roads in Peoria will continue throughout the day.
Public Works is advising drivers to travel slower than normal, give yourself extra distance and time, and be aware of changing road conditions.
