PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria Police were called to a crash in the 3400 block of N. University Thursday evening involving a car and a pedestrian.
PPD Spokesperson Semone Roth says when officers arrived around 5:45 p.m., they found a 66-year-old man down in the southbound lane of N. University. The victim’s wheelchair was found near him.
The man driving the vehicle that hit the victim was also still at the scene when police arrived. He told police he did not see the victim until it was too late, and he was unable to avoid hitting the man.
The victim was taken to a hospital with serious injuries where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The victim’s identity and cause of death will be released by the Peoria County Coroner.
The driver of the vehicle was not arrested, and no citations were issued.
The incident remains under investigation by Peoria Police.
