PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria Police have a new union contract with raises the city manager says will compete with salaries offered in comparable cities, and to increase pay for new officers.
City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night for a three-year deal with the PPD that will cost Peoria an extra $1.4 million the first year, and $3.3 million more for the remainder of the contract, according to City Manager Patrick Urich.
According to 25 News, all Peoria officers will receive a minimum 5-percent increase in the first year, a 4-percent raise the second year, and a 3-percent pay increase in the final year of the deal.
Urich says the starting pay for officers just out of the police academy in 2024 was $67,595. By 2027, starting pay will be $80,340, a 17-percent increase.
In an effort to retain current officers in the PPD, the contract also rewards longevity with 2-percent added to the base pay for officers working at least five years, 4-percent more for officers with 10 years of service, 6-percent for 15 years of service, and 8-percent more for officers working 20 years with the PPD.
