PEORIA, Ill. – Just after 10 p.m. Tuesday, Peoria firefighters were sent to a reported fire at the Versailles Hamlet Apartments on W. Loire Court.
Fire Battalion Chief Rick Waldron says they found heavy smoke coming from the garage below the apartments, then heavy fire inside the garage that involved two cars and some cooking equipment that housed propane tanks.
The fire was beginning to extend to the balcony of the apartment above it, Waldron says.
All of the occupants were able to evacuate the building. Crews had the fire out within 10 minutes. They found some extension of the fire in the balcony above the garage, and it was also put out quickly.
The fire was contained to the garage area, preventing any fire spread to the living spaces above it.
Firefighters remained on the scene for several hours to extinguish hot spots and vent smoke from the complex.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The combined vehicle and structure damage is estimated at $200,000.
Multiple families were displaced due to smoke damage.
