PEORIA, Ill. – After several fatal crashes involving pedestrians, the Peoria Police Department is offering tips to keep you safe while crossing the roads.
PPD says pedestrian safety involves following Illinois’ traffic laws, obeying signals, and being aware of drivers around you.
Peoria Police say pedestrians should always use crosswalks or intersections when crossing the street, avoid suddenly entering the path of a moving vehicle, use sidewalks if they’re available, and avoid standing in the road.
Always yield to vehicles when you’re crossing without a crosswalk, look both ways before stepping into the road, avoid distractions while crossing the street, and watch for cars turning at intersections, because they might not see you.
PPD says never assume drivers can see you, make yourself visible by wearing bright or light colored clothes, and carry a flashlight at night.
Drivers should yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks and school zones. They should come to a complete stop when a pedestrian is in a crosswalk, obey posted speed limits, and slow down when necessary.
PPD says drivers and pedestrians both are responsible for traffic safety. Drivers should be prepared to yield the right-of-way and not drive unnecessarily close to pedestrians.
