WASHINGTON, Ill. – The proposed amphitheater project in Washington was one of the topics of Saturday’s mayoral debate in the city.
City council members Lili Stevens and Mike Brownfield are vying for the job, after long-time mayor Gary Manier elected to not run for re-election this year. The Consolidated election is April 1st.
The planned 5,000-seat facility along U.S. Route 24 and Nofsinger would add a pavilion, community event space, and space for future development. Part of the funding for the project is being provided by Washington High alumnus Jim Hengst.
“I am for the amphitheater, maybe not the way this amphitheater has been presented, but I think, again, just like anything that brings people to Washington to improve our revenue system is good,” said Stevens.
“I’ve been adamant in meetings I’m not prepared to make a vote one way or another. Until we get all the answers, we just have to continue to do our job and see if this great endowment could work for the city,” said Brownfield.
On other topics, Stevens says she would like all decisions to be made in public meetings, and vowed to not serve as mayor for as long as Manier has.
Brownfield says he wants Washington to restart committee meetings, as well as the city improving how it gets information to the public.
