UPDATED 2:05 P.M.
PEORIA, Ill. โ The head of the Peoria County Election Commission says primary voting day is smooth sailing so far.
Executive Director Elizabeth Gannon says, as of 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, around 2,200 voters have cast their ballots at 30 polling locations, and the commissionโs office.
Thatโs in addition to the around 7,500 ballots cast in early voting and vote-by-mail.
Gannon is hopeful to hit a goal of 15% voter turnout.
โI think weโll hit that. I donโt think weโll get to 20%, but weโll definitely get over that 15% threshold,โ Gannon said.
Gannon says there have been no major issues so far with voting on Tuesday. But she says the only problem thatโs come up is confusion.
โWeโve got a lot of voters that are showing up, not understanding why they canโt vote,โ Gannon said. โIf you do not live within the city limits of Peoria, you do not have a primary election. Your opportunity to vote will be the consolidated election, which is April 1st.โ
Gannon says the tallies on Tuesday night will not be official for about two weeks, saying that mail-in and dropbox ballots will need to be counted. She says that is expected to add a few hundred more to the vote totals.
Polls close at 7:00 P.M.
