PEORIA, Ill. – The April 1st consolidated election ballot in Peoria County is close to being official, after Tuesday night’s primary in Peoria.
More than 12,600 ballots were cast throughout the primary via early voting, vote-by-mail, and votes on Election Day. Initial numbers from the Peoria County Election Commission’s results report shows 17.93% turnout, from more than 70,000 registered voters.
The results of Tuesday’s primary will not be official for a couple weeks, to account for vote-by-mail ballots to come to the Election Commission.
In the mayoral race, incumbent Rita Ali appears to have won one of two spots on the April 1st ballot, receiving 51.66% of the vote. Ali was the top vote earner on Election Day, early voting, and vote-by-mail.
The race to determine her challenger was a little closer, with at-large councilman John Kelly securing 24.67% of the vote, to best 2nd District Councilman Chuck Grayeb’s 23.67%. The vote difference between Kelly and Grayeb was 127 votes.
Grayeb received more vote-by-mail ballots than Kelly, by 332 votes. But Kelly made up the difference on Election Day, besting Grayeb by 446 votes. Kelly received 13 more votes than Grayeb in early voting.
The race for the two contenders for Peoria City Treasurer was not as close. Jim Montelongo received 49.56% of the total vote to finish in the top spot. His likely challenger will be Brooke Sommerville, who received 37.07% of the vote. Asya Washum finished in a distant third with 13.36% of the vote.
The race to replace Grayeb in District Two on the city council was a close one in last night’s primary election.
Estrella Diaz led the way with 35.45% of the total vote. Alex Carmona appears to be Diaz’ challenger, finishing with 35.22% of the vote. The difference between Diaz and Carmona was five votes.
Krista Wresinski finished in 3rd with 29.33% of the vote, or 130 votes behind Carmona.
Voters in Peoria Township appear to have elected a new Assessor. Andrew Couri easily bested Terry Grawey in Tuesday’s Republican primary, receiving 67.03% of the vote. There is no Democrat contender in that race on April’s ballot.
