PEKIN, Ill. – Pekin’s City Council has given the green light to plans for a new cannabis dispensary in the historic downtown area.
Miggy’s Shop LLC requested a special use permit for a dispensary on Court Street, where the former Pekin Performing Arts Center used to be.
Under the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, the store would be licensed as a “social equity” dispensary, promoting ownership and employment opportunities for marginalized communities, while addressing the disproportionate impacts of the war on drugs in those communities.
Pekin City Manager John Dossey tells 25 News, dispensary sales will generate thousands of dollars for Pekin’s public safety pensions and help increase economic activity in the downtown area.
“It’s coming whether we like it or not. My mindset was to set yourself up to be eligible to have shops and to get those revenues when they present themselves,” said Dossey.
It’s not clear yet when the dispensary will open for business.
