PEORIA, Ill. – A sign of spring in Peoria greeted hungry customers this (Friday) morning.
Emo’s Ice Cream opened for the season, with people lining up before dawn to get half-price ice cream and coney dogs from 6:00-10:00 A.M.
Co-owner Robert Smith tells 25 News that more than 1,000 coney dogs were prepared for opening day.
“Riverside Woodworking from Metamora was our first order; he had 16, then we had one for 24, then we had one for 125 from Uftring, so we get a lot of big orders. We’ve had a couple for 48,” said Smith.
Mike Olson has made opening day a tradition, and has been a customer for more than 60 years.
“My family moved here from Michigan on July 31, 1963. I was 15, and now I’m going to be 77. I don’t even have to give my order anymore. I probably come here five days a week during the summer,” said Olson.
Opening day was scheduled for Thursday, but pushed back a day because of the snow.
A portion of the morning’s sales are being donated to St. Jude and Susan G Komen.
