WASHINGTON, Ill. – One of Washington’s existing council members will soon be the city’s next mayor.
Lilija Stevens won Tuesday’s consolidated election, receiving over 54-percent of the vote, defeating fellow Ward One Councilman Michael Brownfield.
Stevens says the council is very diverse, and multi-generational…something that she says can serve the city well.
“The way I perceive the people on the council, they’re the type of people that have an open mind, they would want information on both sides, positive and negative, to make an informed decision. I feel that this is a council that will truly be representing their constituents,” Stevens says.
Stevens also says, moving forward, it will also be very important to involve the community in decisions that will affect all residents.
“I think the turnout of the election indicates that the community is feeling hopeful that they will be involved in input before decisions are made by the city council,” Stevens says.
Stevens takes over for longtime Washington Mayor Gary Manier, who chose not to run for another term.
Stevens says she’s looking forward to reviving the Economic Development Commission, because the city needs more revenue. She says that means support for new business, as well as for existing businesses in the city.
