PEORIA, Ill. โ The city of Peoria has a new agreement for waste collection services that it hopes lasts for decades to come.
The city council Tuesday night approved a three-year deal with Green for Life, International. This comes after the city had intended to terminate its contract with Peoria Disposal Services, who is owned by GFL, at the end of June.
The deal calls for unlimited weekly trash pickup, recycling every other week, and 36 weeks of landscape pickup from March to December. It also provides for services, such as recycling and trash collection at city-owned buildings, bulky waste collection, neighborhood cleanup boxes, and collection from neighborhood cans.
City documents state the new deal helped get GFL to negotiate a new landfill deal for the city and county, that could provide affordable costs to the city for at least 30 years. Landfill #2 is nearing closure, and a transfer station is being built in the meantime.
Third District Councilman Tim Riggenbach says the agreement is a โsweet spotโ for the city.
โWeโre going to have the same landfill operator as the entity picking up our residential trash on a regular basis. This is something the landfill committee has strived for for years as we wait for Landfill 2 to close,โ Riggenbach said.
In the first year of the deal, going into effect on July 1st, residents will pay $16.25 per month, with increases of 60 cents the next two years. The city is estimating it will raise more than $7.4 million in the first year, and $8 million by year three.
City Manager Patrick Urich says the contract has been structured to help work toward eliminating an about $4.5 million deficit in the garbage fund.
