PEORIA COUNTY, Ill. โ An investigation is under way after damage at the Peoria Disposal Company led to runoff water going into creeks.
Peoria County Sheriff Chris Watkins says he was called to PDC Friday morning, where he and a supervisor traveled down a service trail and passed a locked vehicle barrier.
There, another supervisor told Watkins an unknown suspect knocked down a ten-foot section of metal chain link fence between April 9th and 11th and gained entry into the landfill area. Watkins says damage to the fence is estimated at $2500.
The suspect then reportedly turned on two separate drainage valves, releasing thousands of gallons of landfill runoff water into nearby creeks and drainage areas.
The supervisor also reported a nearby property owner had a deer stand broken and three chairs stolen, with two on their property and one on top of a hill overlooking the drainage valves.
Watkins says it is unknown who gained entry, but may have used an ATV due to the barrier.
He says the EPA has been informed of the incident.
