PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria-area’s Democratic Congressman says Dick Durbin has been an “incredible leader in our state.”
17th District Congressman Eric Sorensen (D-Moline) reflected on Durbin’s career in Peoria Thursday during a stop at the Midwest Food Bank.
“I’m so lucky that I’ve actually gotten to work with him, I’ve gotten to know Dick Durbin, but then also Dick Durbin as our senator, believed in me,” Sorensen said.
Sorensen says one of the reasons Durbin was successful was his ability to talk to people across the state, and that the next Senator to succeed Durbin should embody that mindset of representing everyone, and not just Chicago.
Sorensen is not endorsing a candidate at this time. But he is hoping to not lose the person representing his neighboring district.
16th District Congressman Darin LaHood (R-Dunlap) has been rumored to declare his candidacy for the U.S. Senate next year in the wake of Dick Durbin announcing his intentions to not seek re-election this week.
Eric Sorensen says he does not want to lose the working relationship he’s built up with LaHood.
“Because I’m not sure that in this political climate, if he is replaced by someone else, that I would have that ability,” Sorensen said.
Sorensen says he and LaHood work well together in fighting for causes in their neighboring districts. He cited LaHood fighting for funding and support for the Peoria Ag Lab, and himself for the Midwest Food Bank’s location in Morton.
