PEKIN, Ill. – Tazewell County prosecutors have officially charged the man accused in a double homicide early Thursday morning in South Pekin.
Two counts of First Degree Murder charges were filed Friday against 21-year-old Memphis Rue in the deaths of Dawson Reese and Chase Rhodes, both 21-years-old. A petition to detain Rue until trial has also been filed.
Prosecutors say an autopsy conducted on Friday reveals Reese and Rhodes died of gunshot wounds.
Deputies responded to the shooting at a house just off of Illinois Route 29 near County Road 11000 North at around 4:45 A.M., finding David Reese reportedly pointing a firearm at Rue, who was lying on the kitchen floor. They then located Rhodes and Dawson Reese deceased in the basement.
Prosecutors say David fell asleep on the living room couch at around midnight, but was awoken by several gunshots and Rue screaming “They’re dead! They’re dead!” He then witnessed Rue coming up the basement stairs with a firearm.
David had followed Rue to the kitchen and took the firearm from him, and reportedly held him at gunpoint until deputies arrived.
David had stated to deputies that Dawson, Chase, and Rue were all good friends and hanging out in the basement the night prior.
