PEORIA, Ill. – Two people have been indicted for their involvement with a local violent street gang.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says Chavez Allen and Marshawn Smith were indicted and their cases transferred to adult court Tuesday under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, or RICO.
Prosecutors say Allen and Smith are involved with the gang known as the “Snakes.”
The gang is alleged to be linked to at least three murders and 12 shootings in the area, with four adults and six juveniles, including Allen and Smith, previously indicted in October.
Smith is also charged with Attempt First Degree Murder and Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, and is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence on a previous weapons conviction.
Allen is also charged with Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and was ordered to remain in jail at a detention hearing on Tuesday.
