PEORIA, Ill. – A Peoria man was given the maximum sentence for a fatal crash in February of last year.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says 53-year-old Vanda Terrell was sentenced to 14 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on Wednesday.
The crash occurred the evening of Valentine’s Day last year, when prosecutors say Terrell was traveling more than double the speed limit and ran multiple stop signs. His vehicle crashed into one driven by 46-year-old Wardrick Millburn in the area of Blain and Butler. Millburn later died at a hospital.
Prosecutors say Terrell had a blood alcohol content above the legal limit. He pleaded guilty to Aggravated DUI Causing Death in February.
At the sentencing hearing, with Millburn’s family present, prosecutors argued Terrell caused the fatal crash by choosing to drive recklessly while under the influence of alcohol and marijuana.
Terrell must serve at least 85% of his sentence.
