PEORIA, Ill. – The Susan G. Komen Foundation hosted its 40th More Than Pink Walk Saturday at the Metro Centre.
The event is the main fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Susan G. Komen of Peoria died in 1980 after a three-year battle with breast cancer at the age of 36. Her sister promised her she would do whatever she could to end the disease.
Lesley Howard participated in Saturday’s event along with her daughter, Laurie Hannon. Both are breast cancer survivors.
“It feels wonderful to be able to know that there are so many generous people who are willing to donate and spread awareness to help other cancer patients,” Howard told 25 News.
While the breast cancer rate has dropped by 40 percent since Komen’s founding, new data shows an increase in diagnoses among younger women.
The money raised during Saturday’s event will go toward Komen’s efforts to fund research and financial assistance for breast cancer patients.
