LERNA, Ill. – The U.S. Geological Survey says a 3.3 magnitude earthquake happened late Monday night near Lerna, Illinois, about 50 miles south of Champaign.
The quake was considered mild, with no damage reported. Over 100 people in the area said they felt movement.
The earthquake hit Coles and Cumberland County at approximately 11:43 p.m., with its epicenter within five miles of Lerna.
The Washbash Valley Fault Zone is responsible for rumblings felt across southeastern Illinois.
Illinois experienced a 5.2 magnitude quake in 2008, which was strong enough to cause damage.
A 3.6 magnitude quake hit Central Illinois in Putnam County in 2023.
