PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria grocery tax is here to stay.
A proposal by Councilman Zach Oyler to reconsider the tax at Tuesday night’s meeting was not discussed, after no other member seconded the motion to begin the topic.
Last month, the council approved a 1% local grocery tax to replace a similar state tax expiring at the end of the year.
One of Oyler’s concerns was the tax being passed last month without a full council present.
“Three-quarters of the council decided to raise what is termed a regressive tax on you, and don’t want the other quarter of the council to have the opportunity to weigh in on the discussion,” Oyler said.
Councilmen Denis Cyr and John Kelly were not at the April 22nd meeting where the tax was approved, and Alex Carmona was not yet a council member.
Oyler’s other concern was his belief that the tax should have been discussed during budget meetings, where revenues and impacts are more known.
