PEORIA, Ill. – The annual ceremony honoring Peoria’s fallen officers who died in the line of duty was held outside City Hall Wednesday.
Chief Eric Echevarria said he’s grateful for his officers’ safety this past year, but wants people to remember the 15 officers Peoria has lost over the years.
Echevarria also told 25 News, safety training is always underway.
“They go to the academy, they have an in-house training, and then they have a field training, and then there’s yearly training on just about everything, so there’s a lot of training that goes on,” said Echevarria. “Some of it is ownership of your training, and keeping your body and mind physically and mentally fit.”
The chief adds that the Peoria Police Department has an assistance program, chaplains, and social workers for those officers grieving or going through hard times, and other resources for the families of those police officers.
