PEKIN, Ill. – Pekin Police conducted a criminal investigation Wednesday evening that led to a high-risk search warrant for a residence on Court Street, near Mineral Springs Park.
The Central Illinois Emergency Response Team (CIERT) was called in to execute the search warrant.
Chief Seth Ranney says Pekin Police worked with several agencies including the Pekin Fire Department to evacuate the area for safety purposes. Pekin High School and Park personnel were also notified.
CIERT utilized armored vehicles and while they were setting up outside the residence, a male identified as Tyler Whitney came out. He was detained without incident and was found to be in possession of methamphetamine.
Once Whitney was in custody and taken from the scene, CIERT team members made an announcement on a loudspeaker telling all occupants of the residence to come out. After numerous announcements were made, Ryan Brown came out of the residence with a bag around his torso.
CIERT told Brown to place the bag on the ground and he complied. He was detained without incident. Peoria’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit utilized specialized equipment to search the bag, finding a loaded handgun inside.
Pekin Police say throughout the evening, EOD members along with CIERT searched the residence to make sure there were no additional occupants inside, and then completed a search in compliance with the search warrant.
EOD members found several pounds of a material consistent with being explosive materials, along with suspected detonation devices inside the residence. Those items will be sent to a specialized lab for testing.
Pekin detectives found an additional handgun that had been defaced, additional methamphetamine, and recovered several stolen items from the residence.
Ryan Brown was arrested for armed violence, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and possession of stolen property.
Tyler Whitney was arrested for armed violence, possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, and possession of a defaced firearm.
No officers or bystanders were injured in the incident. One suspect was taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
PEKIN, Ill. – A man was detained by Pekin Police Wednesday evening, then left in an ambulance in the area of Court Street across from Mineral Springs Park.
Police were involved in a standoff with the man for several hours.
In a Facebook post around 5:30 p.m., Pekin Police advised the public to avoid an area of Court Street due to an ongoing investigation and high-risk search warrant.
According to 25 News, the suspect was in an apartment complex above the Parkside Auto Sales building. Police repeatedly asked the man to leave the building unarmed, with his hands up.
The suspect came out around 7 p.m., leaving with his hands up but with a satchel around his body. Police ordered him to drop the bag, and he did.
The man was handcuffed just before police had to administer emergency medical assistance. He was taken from the scene to a hospital by ambulance.
Around 10:30 p.m., Pekin Police put out a post on Facebook saying the area was back open and that more information would be released Thursday.
