WASHINGTON, Ill. – The city of Washington will need to wait a little longer to officially hire a police chief.
The city is looking to hire interim chief Jeff Stevens to the full-time role, but city code would require him to move to Washington. Stevens currently lives near Bartonville.
Aldermen are considering amending the code to allow for living within 25 miles of the city limits if they’ve been an employee for at least 15 years.
Ward IV Alderman John Blundy made a motion to bypass the second reading and approve the changes Monday night.
“We’ve talked about it in Committee of the Whole, I certainly just don’t see a reason to delay it, it seems like everybody was in favor of it,” Blundy said.
While a majority of the council agreed by a 5-2 vote, it did not receive the six votes needed to ignore the second reading.
City Administration Dennis Carr says the second reading will occur in two weeks.
