SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – As Memorial Day Weekend gets underway, Illinois State Police will be out looking for distracted and drunk drivers, and seat belt violations.
“We are going to have an increased number of troopers out on the roadway, whether that’s in town, or on the interstate. Front seat or back seat, you have to have your seat belt fastened, and fastened properly. If you have your seat belt behind your back, you can be ticketed,” Illinois State Trooper Jayme Bufford says.
ISP will be out looking for the “Fatal Four”…speeding, not wearing a seat belt, distracted driving, and driving under the influence.
“Designate a sober driver, use a ride share…Uber, Lyft, whatever it may be. Don’t get into a car with someone who’s been drinking, and don’t drink and drive,” Bufford says.
Enhanced law enforcement will be in place in support of the “Click It or Ticket” campaign, day and night, through Monday.
Illinois State Police just want to make sure everyone gets to their destination safely. Last year, there were 19 deaths on Illinois roads during the long holiday weekend.
