PEORIA, Ill. – The people of Peoria came together to honor the fallen on Memorial Day on the Riverfront.
The annual ceremony hosted by the Peoria Memorial Day Committee featured patriotic songs from the Peoria Municipal Band, recognition of current veterans and their families, and Gold Star families.
This year’s guest speaker was US Army Lieutenant Colonel Hal Fritz, who is also a Medal of Honor Recipient. Fritz says that honor is not just one that belongs to him.
“I’m merely the messenger that’s been given the message to transmit to America the meaning of sacrifice, service, dedication, of America’s young people,” Fritz said.
Fritz urged everyone to make it an obligation to remember those who have fallen, because while they are there in spirit, they are not there in body to enjoy their families and gatherings.
Fritz also wants people to remember the sacrifice of those who currently serve, and their families.
