PEORIA, Ill. – An appellate court has reduced the prison sentence of a man convicted for his role in a fatal pedestrian crash in Peoria two years ago.
The 4th District Appellate Court ruled that the judge in the case improperly sentenced Demetrius Drummond to an extended term for his conviction on reckless discharge of a firearm. His sentence in that conviction was reduced from six years to three.
The judge’s reasoning was that the course of conduct that night was similar in both cases, and it was not appropriate to extend the sentence.
The court kept in place a nine-year sentence for unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.
The incident occurred in the early morning hours of October 28th, 2023, where Drummond fired his gun into the air after an argument at a party at Knoxville and Thrush.
24-year-old Kobe Johnson was inadvertently run over by a vehicle after the shots were fired, and later died.
